After growing up in Greenwich Village, New York City, she went on to study at Sarah Lawrence College in 1987, where she majored in liberal arts.

Fourteen months after the cancellation of the Witchblade series, Butler was arrested and charged with disorderly intoxication. She was ordered to enter rehabilitation at the Renaissance Institute in Boca Raton by a South Florida court. Later, it was discovered she had injuries from acting and family problems which led to her alcohol abuse.
