LjubiÄić entered professional tennis in 1998, and played in the final of the ATP Challenger in Zagreb, where he lost to Alberto Berasategui. He played a number of smaller tournaments the same year, but had little success and finished the year as #293.

Prior to the Australian Open, LjubiÄić played a tournament in Chennai, seeded 1 he was expected to do well on the hardcourts there. Playing well he reached the final and defeated Spaniard Carlos Moyà 7–6, 6–2. It proved to be a great preparation for the Australian Open.
