He was born in El Toro, California to Alice and Jeff Krause and he is the younger of two children, his older brother is named Patrick. Krause was married to Beth Bruce and had a son, Jamen (born in 1996), with her. They later divorced in 2000. There were rumors he dated co-star Holly Marie Combs but those were never confirmed. He also dated other co-star Alyssa Milano but that relationship has since ended[citation needed].

Krause landed his first role in 1989 as a student in the TV series TV 101, the episode was titled Kangaroo Gate.
